Tomb Raider FAIL

marielikestodraw:

After the whole ridiculous and offending “revamping” of the character with implied rape attempt to build up her “character” history (first the comment was “the players will connect with her and want to protect her” which is like a whole new level of fucked up and turning her into a victim, then they backpaddled and said the message was “misunderstood”), I went on the tag to find some stuff to reblog.

And promptly managed to hit my head against the wall repeatedly.

Some MALE Tumblr users are complaining about the people complaining about the game, saying that this is the real world and that the game editors do not owe us anything and that reality is harsh and shit. Many of them are also saying they have no problems with that storyline and don’t understand what the fuss is about, basically because these things happen.

To all of those people: Fuck off.

I can not spend an hour developping why, how, what is terrible about the whole thing, this is beyond my level of patience, so instead, educate yourself and read more about the problem and how offending this is, and how it’s important that people actually make a fuss.

READ THIS: the Mary-Sue.

Because obviously, rape is an acceptable character building trait for a female character (who has existed for more than 10 years without that), for the sake of a game, especially in the eye of male gamers. Because that’s part of life, for women, you see.

JFC, let me fuckin die.

Thank God some guys have come forward to express their digust but the fact that some don’t see the problems IS the problem.

Im probably wording this all wrong but this. is. not. OK.

I’m so angry about this. Because male gamers (who are obviously the target audience because of all the talk about how she’s not as sexy anymore) can’t possibly relate to a female protagonist, right, so they have to protect her instead? Because you can’t possibly be a strong woman unless you go through an attempted rape and manage to get away? Because Lara isn’t sexy any more, she’s vulnerable (because those are our two options, ladies), she needs protecting from rape (because there’s no defending it, unlike the rape of sexualised women, right?)? SO ANGRY. Read the article.

It’s just so close to the fucked up message we get in real life: you didn’t play the game right. You got raped, and that’s how it worked.
